I drew some Drawfee fan art, and recorded the process. Now I have this big long video aping the Drawfee style (with no co-hosts - it's really hard to be funny on your own while also talking about drawing art)!
If y'all have any interest in Speeddraws, Drawfee, or for some godforsaken reason the sound of my voice, feel free to check out the video! I'll be posting the art from this here shortly, so keep an eye out for that too!
Been working on this for the last couple weeks during a gap between contracts at my current studio, and it's finally completed enough to show off!
Featuring a freaky unicorn, shoe language, plane crashes, and economics lessons, I think this is definitely an improvement on the first one, both in terms of the jokes and the quality of the animation!
I really hope you all enjoy it, and if you like it, please share it with folks you know who'd probably also like it! :D
"This is Normal" was brand new, having had it's own website launched in the last days of 2009. It managed to keep to a one-a-day schedule for the entire year somehow (being a little bit shit probably helped ). I finished my GCSEs and started my A Levels, doing animation as part of both of the Media Studies courses to get practising and as an excuse to make stuff. This was when DA was most like a community to me, though I was still fairly active on Newgrounds at the time as well. Also, the Tories won the UK general election and went into coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dems betrayed the trust of young people by not only NOT abolishing tuition fees, but tripling them.
2011
The above short, "Rick and Rooster: Supervillian Security", what I would consider my first animated short of any real value. I'd made shorts before, most notably the Shortened Shakespeare series, but this is the first one with entirely original characters and story. Watching it back, I still love it, even though it's flaws are 100% in your face the whole time (god dammit, Tim, would it kill you to have the characters move once in a while?) and honestly, I'd probably be happy to remake this using the same script, just with better quality recordings for audio and try to get someone to do a proper background sound and music mix for it.
A-Levels were going well, and I was really unsure whether I was going to university or not. I was making good animated stuff for class, but outside of that? Well, there just wasn't much animated content I was watching. I wasn't binge watching Newgrounds like I used to, there weren't any cartoons on TV that I was following, I wasn't really into the big animated films out around the time. I just felt like the passion for animation wasn't there anymore.
But then, the weirdest thing happened...
2012
"My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" really blew up in 2012. This was the first time I'd ever really gained anything remotely resembling traction online, crossing the threshold of 200 watchers by September. I was still trying to make pony be a small part of what I was putting up online, and it was probably about a third, all said and done. I finished my A Levels and went to university for animation, joining the Bristol Bronies meetup group. I also went to San Diego Comic Con this year, in what is still probably one of the best experiences of my life. I'd love to go again some day.
2013
The pony thing really took off - it was about half of what I was posting here on DeviantArt, even while outside of DA I was working away at university. I hit 1000 watchers in November because of that, and had my most successful pony comic series, the "Shining Armor is a Goddamn Moron" series, which later inspired its own tag on Derpibooru. In February, this cool weird Canadian chick rocked up to one of the Bristol Brony meets, and we kissed at the start of March. She had to go back over the summer, but we vlogged the whole time to help stay in touch and stay a part of each others' lives. An old friend of mine died tragically in a motorcycle accident in June, and I carried his coffin out of the funeral. That particular time, as well as Alexx's time outside the UK being longer than expected, were dark marks on what was otherwise a really quite good year.
2014
Uni progressed really well, I made "Under the Weather", started pre-production on what would become "Grave Mistake", and got to do work on Sam Shaw's "Dead and Breakfast". The pony stuff trundled along nicely too. I also got my first "real" job, working at a convenience store in central Bristol. Honestly, parts of this year blend into both 2013 and 2015 in my mind, so it's kinda difficult to parcel out other distinctive stuff about this year. It was good though, solid continuation from 2013.
2015
If I'm going to have peaked early, this would be the year I did. I completed "Grave Mistake", which was nominated for an award by the Royal Television Society, graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree, rolled pretty much straight out of uni into a paid internship with A Productions, before freelancing with Sun and Moon Studios. For the first time in my life, I managed to get completely financially independent for a short while. Unfortunately, Alexx was unable to stay in the UK, and had to leave at the end of October, so the last 2 months of this year were spent working towards getting my ass over to Canada, saving up money and - at one point - working 3 jobs to do so. "Grave Mistake" would go on to amass over 3 millions views on YouTube and single-handedly propel my YT channel to over 12,000 subscribers. There've been times where my YouTube income has been vital to getting me from the end of one paycheque to the next, and it's impact is hard to overstate. This was a defining year for me. I went from student to graduate to professional, I went from being entirely reliant on my parents to financial independence, I went from dating to engaged, and I went from seeing my future in Bristol to working towards a future in Canada.
2016
The above comic has remained depressingly relevant. 2016 was a year of big change, but also of long grinds. I started the year by finally getting my ass to Canada and joining Alexx at our new apartment in Halifax. There were a few months of trying to keep freelancing using my Bristol connections, but it became apparent a couple months in that that wasn't going to work. Luckily, I found an animation studio here in Canada eager to take me on. And so I worked consistently at Cartoon Conrad from June 2016 onwards, slowly progressing until I got the role of Senior Animator on the show "Addison". There were also some big political upsets that year. The Leave victory in the UK's EU referendum was shock upset, and Trump's victory in the States caught way too many people off-guard. All in all, it was weird to have my career find firm ground right as the world seemed to totally reorganise itself.
2017
This year, I married the woman I love. I know our weight was on the up at the time, but I really don't care, that day was perfect, and most of the photos we have of it are beautiful. I don't regret that at all. As well as this, I continued working at Cartoon Conrad, I organised the 2017 Halifax Science March, and worked to try and get a permanent visa sorted to stay in Canada. Unfortunately, by December, it was clear that my attempts to get Permanent Resident status weren't going to bare fruit by the time my current 2-year visa expired. I still look back on what I did to get PR in 2017 and tally through the points at which it could have gone so differently. It's hard, owning that kind of mistake. On the bright side, Jeremy Corbyn destroyed the Tory majority and came within a hair's breadth of becoming Prime Minister. We came so close to greatness.
2018
2018 fucking sucked. I came closer than I thought possible to not having to leave Canada, having gotten some vital pieces of paperwork through in the last 3 weeks before I had to legally leave. As soon as I touched down in the UK again, I busted my ass for 2 weeks to get everything done now that I had all the pieces I needed, including a trip to some medical centre in the north of Birmingham to get examined. Once it was all ready, I submitted. And then I waited. And waited. And waited. The estimated processing time was 6 months. At the 6 month mark, I sent off for the notes they had related to my application. The application had been held up because the reference letter from Cartoon Conrad was missing one piece of information. I quickly organised a new letter from the same manager who'd written my previous one, correcting the mistake, and sent that in. And again, the waiting. All the while, Alexx was alone in Canada, dealing with therapy and her mum's diagnosis of terminal cancer alone. We flew to see each other a few times, but it wasn't enough. It didn't balance out at all. The main good things that happened outside of visiting each other were finishing the Doctor Chaotic short and "Short Attention Spam".
2019
The Brexit mess trundled along its impasse, leading to a fresh election, ending the decade, as it began, with the Tories winning an election, this time with a strong majority. Alongside that, I continued waiting and waiting, until, finally, in July, I received an e-mail asking for a passport-style photo and a photocopy of my passport. Finally. I ummed and ahhed over whether to stay in the UK until I finished learning to drive and got my driving licence, but in the end it made sense to just get on a plane. I was there to help Alexx and Malcolm move us out of the Halifax apartment into one in Dartmouth, and I had a couple months of work with Cartoon Conrad. Unfortunately, because I wasn't a Canadian resident on 31 Dec 2018, they ran out of projects to put me on. The residency on that date was a requirement of the tax credits they were using to fund the projects they had in. So I finished the year working a seasonal part time job at Lush.
2020
So far, things are headed back towards stability. I have a job lined up for the end of this month that'll pay well. I still have connections with Cartoon Conrad, and I'm in touch with Jam Filled, another studio looking to expand into Halifax in the spring. Once I'm working, I can pay off the debts of the last couple months of part timing, and really get my feet under me again here in Canada. Fingers crossed for the future.

10,000 SUBSCRIBERS STREAM TOMORROW
So I just hit 10,000 subscribers on YouTube yesterday! You can check out the quick little animation I made in celebration for it up above, and if you haven't subbed to my channel yet, now's as good a time as any! Thanks to everyone who is already subscribed - this is an insane number that I never really thought I'd hit (at least not without doing animation fulltime on YouTube), so I'm pretty damn stoked!
As mentioned in the previous journal entry, I'm gonna be doing a stream in celebration - it was originally supposed to be over the space of time where I actually hit the 10k mark, but work schedules bend for no man. So yeh, tomorrow evening,
