What If the Internet Was Censored

I looked into a mirror one day, and I know it's absurd,
But I saw an entire whole other world,
I just froze, didn't know what to do,
Til it grew big enough that I could just step through.
A guy met me, I asked him "what is this?"
He said "this is the world with internet censorship."

Mubarak was firm in Egypt, the revolution was gone,
It'd failed in Tunisia and never caught on,
No outward rage, everybody stayed silent,
When revolution came it was horrific and violent,
The tyrants held their grasp in Libya and Syria,
With no organised opposition in either,
No freedom at all, just autocratic regimes,
Practicing policy of "treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen".
And the scenes never spread, the Middle East locked down,
As apathy went viral, hit every town.

In the States, Obama was never elected,
Instead, Islamophobia spread through the collective,
Rights of the gays swung the wrong way,
And the one percent still got megapay,
The ninety-nine never rose and marched on Wall Street,
Just stoner conspiracies with anti-Jew heat,
SOPA passed, and nobody cared,
Because the thought control was already there,
All social networks had to shut down,
Cos they can't stop their users sharing stuff around,

No legit protest, no one Occupied the streets,
Instead they sat at home and occupied their seats,
As Murdoch and Cowell continued to plow
Into news and culture, shutting opposition down.
As BskyB became Fox News 3,
The line of fact and opinion continued to shrink,
On the brink of monopoly, no people power toppling,
The governments and greed, the politicians waffling,
"Protect the kids, fight terrorists,
Your freedoms we twist, but you don't get the jist.
We make you scream out, ask for security,
And in return we get opinion purity,
If you disagree you can go into obscurity,
Make you too afraid to react furiously."

Now there's nowhere to go, if you harm yourself,
But are too scared to go out and ask for help.
No support for those who're on the edge of giving up,
No way to prove to them that they can still be loved,
No anon protection for the political activist,
No place for the new writer to share his plot twist,
Nowhere for the depressed man to go and find joy,
No acceptance for the girl, who wants to be a boy,
No freedom of speech on the whole internet,
Because all the people only want what they get.

You may not give much thought for old dot com,
But we gotta realise that censorship is wrong!
So as I left the messed up mirror world and went home,
I knew that the gov's gotta leave the internet alone!
Big business counts all the fat profit lost,
But losing net neutrality is far bigger cost!
The net can change everything, it can change the world,
The power's from every man or boy, woman or girl.
We stopped SOPA and got PIPA pipped,
But we gotta stay alert for internet censorship.
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT, GOVERNMENTS. I thought I lived in a democratic world, but apparently not. A treaty written in secret, signed by people no one elected will give power to those who want to suppress opposition - both political and economic - to censor the internet as they see fit.

I thought SOPA was bad. But this is bigger. This is international. If there was a time for the internet to stand up and fight, this would be it, but they got us to use up our momentum on SOPA and PIPA, leaving us off-guard and too worn out to fight ACTA.

So yeh, I think I'm gonna record myself performing this and stick it on YouTube. Apparently, those of us in the EU still have time to call some representatives and fight against it, but I have no idea who or how, so this'll have to do for now.

This was inspired by The King Blue's "What if Punk Never Happened".

EDIT: OK, so I've read up on ACTA now, and it's not as bad as I thought. Rather than being some draconian censorship deal, it SEEMS to be trying to just level out international copyright laws. What this means, however, is that instead of fighting this one treaty, we just have to look out for bad laws being made in our own countries.

I'm still suspicious of this thing though...

-Cough- Not all of us live in a democratic world, and not all of us want to. I’m quite happy in my monarchy thank you very much. No need to offend non-democracies by being so nationalist! @.@

Anyway, SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, DMCA, American laws are too restricting for my liking. I would never host a website there, and if the USA wants to block my site for not bowing to their laws then I'm all for it. How would they like it if I said they had to bow to our laws or we'd block their websites? It can work both ways. Maybe the best way to get rid of the American copyright acts is to embargo their internet? XD; Just block every American website until they stop blocking non-American ones.
